High-Five Approval Animation for Zip

Company: Zip (BNPL service)
Role: Senior Product Designer
Goal: Improve the approval message to boost engagement and conversion rates.
Collaboration: Worked with the product manager for checkout and engineering to get the animation pixel perfect.

The Problem

Customers weren’t realizing they had been approved to use Zip, leading to drop-offs. There was no clear confirmation message, so we needed a way to make this moment obvious and engaging.

Exploring initial solutions

The Solution

I explored three approaches:

  1. Toast Message – Quick but easily missed.

  2. Full-Screen Message – Noticeable but generic.

  3. Animated High-Five – Fun, celebratory, and clear.

User Testing & Results

The high-five animation stood out:

Fun, AND informative.

  • Instant clarity – Users immediately knew they were approved.

  • Positive emotional response – It felt rewarding.

  • Better than alternatives – Other options were forgettable.

Impact

  • Increased conversion rates after launch.

  • Product managers praised the impact of a small design tweak.

  • Reinforced the power of playful, well-timed animations in UX.

Takeaways

This was a great example of how small design changes can make a big difference. Future iterations could explore different animations or A/B test refinements, but overall, this was a fun and effective win.
